February Birthstone - Amethyst
February Birthstone - Amethyst
Happy February, friends! As Amethyst is the birthstone for the month of February AND also a favorite gemstone of St. Valentine, we figured an introduction about this marvelous gemstone was only fitting. Let’s jump into some interesting facts about Amethyst …
Color & Clarity: Amethyst can be found in various shades of purple. The most sought-after colors are a strong reddish purple to traditional purple. There are times when amethyst can be mined in a darker shade of purple. In these instances, it may even appear to be black under dim lighting. Veering away from the traditional color, Rose de France amethyst is found in soft shades of purple such as lilac, pastel purple, or light mauve. Its gentle color is equally as attractive as it’s deeper shades. In most high-quality amethyst gemstones, there are few inclusions visible to the naked eye.
How It’s Mined & Made: Rose de France amethyst was originally discovered in Brazil in the 1800s. Traditional amethyst, however, was discovered much earlier. It’s even mentioned as early as ancient Greece history. All varieties of amethyst are mined inside of geodes and are classified as “quartz.”. A geode is a spherical rock that contains hollow cavities lined with crystals. Some other examples of gemstones retrieved from geodes include agate, chalcedony, or jasper. Additionally, the following are common examples of quartz: citrine (formed by heating amethyst at high temperatures), rose quartz, smoky quartz, onyx, & tiger’s eye. As amethyst is a plentiful gemstone, it tends to be pretty budget friendly.
Ametrine: Below we’ve included some information directly from GIA.edu regarding the unique gemstone Ametrine. This variety of quartz is actually a combination of amethyst and citrine. We’ll share more about citrine later this year.
