March Birthstone - Aquamarine
March Birthstone - Aquamarine
Aquamarine, the clear, light blue/green color conjuring up images of both Caribbean blue seas & sunny skies or ice glaciers & snowy days that we often see in the wintery month of March. Continue reading to see why it's such a beloved stone not only for those who can claim it as their birthstone, but also everyone else.
Aquamarine is part of the Beryl family, it's green counterpart being Emerald, and pink Morganite.
Being a 7.5 - 8 on the Mohs scale, Aquamarine is durable for everyday wear. That hardness along with the stone's crystal structure and large size that they grow to (some even up to 100lbs!) allows it to be cut into intricate fancy shapes that would not be attempted on less durable stones. This makes Aquamarine the stone of choice for many innovative and creative cuts.
One of the most popular blue gemstones, Aquamarine is steeped in myth and legend. It has been said that the mineral beryl gives the wearer protection against foes in battle or litigation. It supposedly makes the wearer unconquerable and amiable, and also quickens the intellect. It was often worn by sailors to protect against shipwreck and to ward off travel sickness.
